RIO 2016: Elaine Thompson advances to 200m final to stay on course for sprint double

Jamaica's Elaine Thompson stayed on course for the sprint double at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil by qualifying for the final of the women’s 200 metres on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old Thompson, won the 100m gold on Saturday, secured her spot in the 200m medal round with a second place finish in first semi-final.

The first-time Olympian logged a season’s best 22.13 seconds to finish behind Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers, who clocked 21.96 for the victory.

Schippers blamed injury after she finished a disappointing fifth in the Olympic 100m final but refused to elaborate on her problems.

Schippers told Dutch media she had been suffering from a “physical problem over the last days” but refused to provide any details after finishing out of the medals in a race in which she was expected to challenge for gold.

The other Jamaican in the semifinal Simone Facey failed to qualify for the final despite clocking a season’s best 22.57 for third place in Semifinal 3.
